CricketForce 2008

From the ECB website:

NatWest CricketForce 2008 has attracted a record 1375 clubs (225 up on last year), 85,000 volunteers (5,000 up on 2007) and an estimated £35-£40 million in cash and kind (an increase of up to £5million on last year).

NatWest CricketForce encourages cricket supporters, their friends and families to give something back to their local community cricket club by volunteering to undertake major renovations to clubhouses and grounds.

Newhaven CC was amongst the clubs taking part this year with a plan to improve the frontage of the clubhouse as well as create a home for the new roller and grounds-keeping equipment. This is the story of the day:

Work begins with the simple task of knocking down a wall.

Surely it was a simple matter of Bryn cutting the bricks and then just give the whole wall a good push and it would be done?

Master builder Dave gives the next generation advice on how to mix cement... 98% sand, 1% cement and a bit of mud...

There was help from the most unlikely of places... here Sussex CCC's catering manager and team analyst help knock the wall down.

When you are a professional sportsman you have to think about your career after sport so Sussex players Matt Prior and Mike Thornely gain invaluable help by fixing the roof...

Reverse Sweep?

With time moving on Bryn calls Andrea with his invisible mobile to say he may be a little later home than the planned 11am.

Harry makes sure all is going well back at the clubhouse.

Daryl makes sure everyone knows which bit is being fixed...

The Bricks That Daryl Laid...

Following success with the clubhouse bricklaying advice is passed on to Graham

Even Jake Robinson dropped by on his way to play for Brighton

While the men made a mess and the women cleaned the boys played cricket - England vs India.

The hard work continued. In the end it took over four hours to take the wall down...

Finally done.

All that was left was the door... oh dear!

At this point Dave was convinced he knew which was the bottom end - others weren't too sure...

The door was finally installed and everything packed away just minutes before the sky opened with hail and sleet. the end to a very productive day.

Day 2...

Not much happened.
